Cenotes, or sinkholes, are one of the natural jewels of the Yucatan Peninsula. The porous limestone ground of the peninsula does not allow surface rivers and lakes to form leaving the water to collect underground forming these stunning caves and lakes. Once the only sources of fresh water in the area, cenotes were a sacred place for the Mayans and considered to be the entrance of the underworld. With over 5,000 of them throughout the Yucatan they captivate and mystify all who visit them. The township of Cuzamá is famous in the region for its beautiful cenotes and the peculiar way in which they are visited. The tour involves visiting and swimming in 3 distinct and untouched centoes by means of a “trucks”, a small 4-person train cart on rails pulled by horses. Ideal for for those who desire an out of the ordinary experience combined with a bit of adventure.
